City of WL receives ICBC Funding for Traffic Lights at 3rd Ave and Oliver St

From the City of Williams Lake:

The City of Williams Lake is pleased that the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia has approved $11,200 in funding from the Road Improvement Program for the signal upgrade project at 3rd Avenue and Oliver Street.

The signal upgrade was completed last month. As with the upgraded traffic lights at 2nd Avenue and Oliver Street, a voice feature informs pedestrians when it is safe to cross the street, and which street is safe to cross. The system is activated by pressing the buttons on the poles at the corners of the intersections. The upgrade also includes efficient LED lights, cameras, and street lights at all four corners.

“Safety for both motorists and pedestrians is a top priority in the downtown core, and these signal upgrades help us create safe intersections,” says General Manager of Planning and Operations Geoff Goodall. “We’re happy to have this funding from ICBC toward the cost of the project.”

“Our road improvement program works in partnership with municipalities and the provincial government to help make roads safer,” says ICBC’s John Pump, manager of the road improvement program. “Safer roads lead to fewer crashes and help prevent injuries and death, which also translates into lower claims costs and helps keep rates stable for our customers.”

This SHOULD not be the role of ICBC --- nor should they be paying the costs of RCMP to run speeding checks

ICBC is an insurance company, and anything else they are doing and paying for is costing us the (the ones paying car insurance) extra for oiur insurance policies.

As the government has a monopoly on vehicle insurance, this is just another scam to gouge dollars from taxpayers!

I think ICBC has an interest in improving safety so there are fewer accidents. Sounds like a decent use of money. They should fix the Mackenzie - Highway 97 intersection.

Alan - sorry, but this is an admirable role that ICBC participates in. If they can spend $10,000 to save even 1 accident, then even if you just look at it in financial terms, it is money very well spent. Same with RCMP targeted policing. IF you are a law-abiding safe driver, you should be happy to see police on the roads enforcing those who make the roads more dangerous. IF you're not a law-abiding driver, then you're a danger to yourself and others, and THAT sucks because you and your dangerous driving habits suck money out of people that pay for insurance.
