City of WL's 2011 Paving Program starts Monday

Editor's Note - I wonder if the next WL City Council will continue this program in 2012, given this year's Paving Program is worth $600,000, including $400,000 used from senior government grants from the Mackenzie Avenue rehab project and the fact the next Williams Lake City Council may be going on a spending restraint program

From the City of Williams Lake:

The City of Williams Lake’s 2011 Paving Program is set to begin Monday, August 15.

The following streets will be milled and paved:

Oliver Street – 8th Avenue to Mackenzie Avenue

Toop Road – Centennial Drive to Highway 97 11th Avenue North

Smedley Street to Highway 97

2nd Avenue South – Oliver Street to Mackenzie Avenue 3rd Avenue South

Barnard Street to Mackenzie Avenue

A short section of Soda Creek Road near the West Fraser lumberyard

The Oliver Street, 2nd Avenue, and 3rd Avenue stretches will all be paved at night, beginning at 7 p.m., to keep traffic disruption to a minimum.

The remaining work will be performed during the day. Flagging crews will assist in directing traffic, and motorist cooperation is appreciated. In addition, no street parking will be allowed on these stretches of street when no parking signs are displayed.

Work on these streets is expected to be complete by the end of August. The total budget for this project is approximately $600,000. The City will use $400,000 in remaining funds from last year’s Mackenzie Avenue Rehabilitation project.

The portions of road to be paved were based on priorities set in the City’s Pavement Management program, which aims to maximize the efficiency and value of paving projects.

“This program is a direct result of Council’s commitment early in our term to develop and implement a road pavement plan,” says Mayor Kerry Cook. “Not only are we taking a coordinated approach to the roads we pave, but we are also setting funds aside each year to ensure we keep up with the paving requirements in the future.”

The roads need to be paved Steve. Should we just let them fall apart? Maybe grants in aid should be cut first.

Thanks for your comment however I would point out that perhaps we need to go deeper and say, as a community, that the basics (police, fire, water, sewer, garbage collection) be funded at 100% first and the thrills be funded, if the money is available because, at the end of the day, this City can not afford to tax "nickle and dime" residential property owners & business/industrial land owners to death.

Some things may need to be put on hold for a year or two until we have a balance between "money coming in" and "money going out"
