The Art of Campaiging and what not to do....

With today leaving 17 weeks until General Voting Day to vote in a new Williams Lake Mayor and Council for the 2011-2014 Term - it has been, shall we say, an interesting week in the local race to become Mayor of Williams Lake

On Tuesday - Scott Nelson (former City of WL Councillor and Mayor) announcing that he wants to become Mayor again and then in response - current City of WL Mayor Kerry Cook pointing the blame for the $528,000 budget overrun for the City's new Fire Hall on Scott Nelson's Council (2005-2008 Term)

On Thursday - WL City Councillor Surinderpal Rathor came out and said, given his position on serving on both Scott Nelson's and Kerry Cook's City Councils', that Kerry Cook was absolutely wrong to point the finger at Scott Nelson and his Council for the budget overrun for the new Fire Hall and her Council which includes Councillor Rathor should take admit responsibility for the overrun

Late yesterday evening - Mayor Cook went back on the radio and said that her Council did indeed take responsibility for running $528,000 over the established budget of $6.5 million for the new Fire Hall.  Given this flip-flop - I'd like to know, as one taxpayer/voter, what she hoped to accomplish given her comments this past Tuesday and yesterday.  As political strategists would say - an effective campaign is the one who "stays on message all the time" and for this - Kerry Cook has failed miserably and now begs the question - How many more flip-flops will Mayor Cook and her campaign team do in the next 16 weeks?

It'll be interesting to see how the Scott Nelson and Walt Cobb campaign teams makes use of this flip-flop by Mayor Cook this past week to their advantage in the weeks ahead, especially later on this year (roughly September 6th and later) when the "real" campaign season begins (September 6th - November 19th)

  1. She didn't flip flop. She said in the winter when Nelson orchestrated the brown envelope garbage that she took responsibility. She said last week she took responsibility. Do you live in the land of opposites? Why don't you ask real questions, like how will Nelson fight crime more effectively? How will Cobb repair relationships with First Nations? How will Cook improve the economy?
My question is: why do you keep making up lies?

  2. Go back and read the media coverage from the brown envelope mess if you don't believe me.

  3. Thanks for your comments, but I'd offer a couple of things:

    1) If Cook did indeed apologize in March over the WL Fire Hall budget overruns - then why the need to attack Scott Nelson over the budget overruns this past Tuesday evening which preticipated Councillor Rathor to speak out Thursday with Mayor Cook speaking again on Friday. Not a good week for her overall

    2) As for your comments re: Scott Nelson and the little Candie Laporte/"brown envelope issue - at present, there is no evidence that directly links Scott Nelson to the "brown envelopes" that appeared at local media outlets. In fact - I only got my information via the regular media and what was dropped out at my apartment before I returned from holidays.

  4. She didn't attack him. He attacked her when he announced. She was merely restating the facts which the radio can't ever seem to get right. It's no secret at all that Rathor doesn't like Cook and would rather see Nelson back in. Which is OK. But that's why he went on the radio - for political reasons. The fire hall is old news.
