BC Heritage Week in the City of WL

The City of Williams Lake’s Heritage Advisory Committee and the Cariboo Regional District’s Heritage Committee will offer walking tours and a speaking event later this month to mark BC Heritage Week, Feb. 20-26.

The City’s Heritage Advisory Committee members have organized a series of tours in historic buildings in conjunction with local businesses and institutions in the downtown, in keeping with the theme “Be A Tourist In Your Own Town.”

Tours will be run at the scheduled times and informally throughout the week. Some tours will be run by the business owners who occupy those sites, while other tours such as the Potato House will be run by Mary Forbes and the Arts Centre by Chief Randy Isfeld and Leah Selk.

“Heritage buildings embody our past; they tell us who we were and who we are,” says Councillor Laurie Walters, who sits on the City Heritage Advisory Committee. “I encourage everyone to participate during BC Heritage Week and learn all about the historic buildings in Williams Lake.”

The CRD Heritage Committee will present Xat’sull Chief Bev Sellars giving a talk entitled “First Nations History and Contributions to Canadian Society” at the Thompson Rivers University Gathering Place at from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22.

“Most people would be amazed to know just how much we all take for granted in our everyday lives is actually rooted in First Nations’ history and culture,” stated CRD Director & Heritage Committee Chair Joan Sorley. “We are very lucky to have an expert such as Chief Bev available to share her knowledge with us, and I urge everyone to come out and learn more as we celebrate Heritage week!”
