“Each year on Remembrance Day, we say thank you to all those who gave their lives for our country, for our freedom.
“It is when we pay silent tribute to the names of those etched in stone in cities large and small so generations who follow remember the price of their duty.
“It is when we honour all those who served – in conflicts past and current – and have returned home to towns, villages and cities across British Columbia, their service complete.
“As Canadians, we have never sought conflict but always rise to the occasion when asked to defend our ideals.
“We know and appreciate what a special place we call home, where differences are settled with ballots and not bullets, where tolerance binds us together and fear does not tear us apart.
“On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we join together to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and those who suffered the ravages of war on our behalf.
“Time may make the service of so many seem a distant memory, but that is their lasting gift, a peace that endures, a belief in democracy and a spirit that won't die.
Let us never forget.”

In Flanders Fields...
In view of Remembrance Day, let's remember the poem of Dr. John McCrae:
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

Please take 2 mins today (at 11:00am) to remember those who went to war to fight for our freedoms... including freedom of speech, freedom to protest and to vote freely for whom you choose

Prime Minister's Statement on Remembrance Day

Tomorrow, we honour generations of brave Canadian men and women in uniform who have fought to defend our country and to promote and protect the values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canadians have always stood ready to defend their country and in the last century nearly two million have served in two World Wars, Korea, Afghanistan, Libya and various other conflict zones. Sadly, we also remember those who, in doing so, have paid the ultimate price with their lives.
“The values our veterans held dear decades ago are still very much alive today in those who continue to serve our great country, be it at home or abroad, through peace support or combat missions.
“The unparalleled spirit, skills and devotion of the members of the Canadian Armed Forces are an example for us all, and our thoughts remain with members currently serving in Afghanistan.
“There are no words to express our profound gratitude to our service men and women who – together with their families and friends – put the interests and security of our country ahead of their own.
“Lest we forget.”

Remembrance Day in Quesnel
The Quesnel branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating Remembrance Day this Friday. Festivities will be underway at the Legion office, starting with the parade at 10:30 a.m, and are open to the public. The parade will arrive at the cenotaph at around 10:55 a.m. where the bugler and duty piper will take their post and O Canada will be sung. After the church service, the lounge will be opening for a lunch provided by Save on Foods. At 4 p.m., there will be a dinner for veterans.

Remembrance Day in Williams Lake
The Williams Lake branch of the Royal Canadian Legion invites the public to join them for Remembrance Day ceremonies that begin at the Gibraltar Room at the Cariboo Memorial Complex with the doors opening at 9 am. The ceremony begins at 10 am with the Colour Party and Veterans Assembly. at 10:25 am there will be a short service and then the march to the cenotaph. At 11 the two minutes silence will be followed by the laying of wreaths. The community is then invited to the Legion in Williams Lake for lunch. There will be a variety of entertainers and at 4 pm a Beef Dip dinner provided by save On Foods. Refreshments for younger participants will be available in the lower Legion Hall. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #260 in 100 Mile House invites you to join members for Remembrance Day observance that starts at 10:30 am on Friday November 11th in front of the Coach House Square. The parade then travels down Birch Avenue, to the 100 Mile Community Hall. The ceremony at the hall begins at 10:55 am. Hot Dogs and hot chocolate will be served in the hall after the service. The 100 Mile Legion will then be holding an open house for all vets, members of the public over the age of 19. For more information call 395-2511.

Home Owner Grant changes for low-income vets

The Province is proposing to enhance the home owner grant to assist more Canadian veterans with low incomes.
“This act of gratitude is a small token of thanks on Remembrance Day to all our veterans for their service and sacrifice,” said Premier Christy Clark.
To pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of younger veterans who have served here at home as well as in foreign conflicts, British Columbia intends to provide an additional grant to help reduce property taxes for lower-income former members of the Canadian Forces by up to $275.
The home owner grant currently provides a maximum reduction in residential property taxes of $570 in the Capital Regional District, the Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Fraser Valley Regional District and $770 in other regions of the Province.
Homeowners age 65 or over, some homeowners with permanent disabilities, and older veterans and their spouses may already be eligible for an additional grant of up to $275.
But under existing rules, only some veterans of the Second World War or the Korean War and their spouses are eligible for the additional home owner grant.
“To recognize those who have served their country and who now face income challenges, the Province is proposing to expand the home-owner grant so that low-income Canadian Forces veterans may be eligible for the additional grant amount, regardless of the conflict they served in,” said Finance Minister Kevin Falcon.
The proposed changes would create a further grant of up to $275 for low-income Canadian Forces veterans with more recent service in the event they do not already qualify as seniors or persons with disabilities.
Details of the intended change will be announced in Budget 2012 and, subject to approval of the legislature, would take effect for the 2012 property tax year.
