The City of Williams Lake, in partnership with BC Transit, is pleased to announce that there will be increased public transit service during the Rogers Hometown Hockey weekend on January 6th and 7th. The schedule has been designed to allow for families to take transit to the downtown core.
Families are encouraged to “Try Transit” during the festival, with riders paying only $1.00 per ride and children under four are free.
“We are pleased to be working with BC Transit on this initiative that will allow for families who are not usually transit riders to try taking the bus downtown. A reduced fare is available for all riders that weekend, and we are happy to report that funds collected will be donated.” says Williams Lake Mayor Walt Cobb.
The City of Williams Lake has been working with the Rogers Hometown Hockey Team to bring the festival to the city, to celebrate both the game of hockey and community spirit. “We want to ensure that all of our community can come downtown to be part of the festivities, and we are pleased to be working with BC Transit. Our goal is to create access for everyone to attend this free family community event,” continues Mayor Cobb.
The Local Organizing Committee also wants to make the festival as accessible for pedestrians as possible. The downtown core is expected to be very busy that weekend and there will be limited parking available. Taking transit makes for a shorter walk around downtown, as close parking will be at a premium. The main bus stops to return home will be on Borland and 3rd and 4th Ave, with drop off points along that route providing easy access to the festival site on Oliver and 3rd Ave, the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex for Stampeders Games, and the weather-permitting Outdoor Ice Rink in Kiwanis Park. Final busses to return home depart downtown daily at around 7:50PM.
Bus Routes and Schedule for the January 6th and 7th weekend will be as posted on the attached Rider’s Bulletin. The Rider’s Bulletin also outlines the transit adjusted route to accommodate for the street closures of downtown January 4-7th.
