The BC Wildfire Service in collaboration with the Cariboo-Chilcotin Natural Resource District will conduct an ecosystem restoration prescribed burn at the north end of Cotton Road near Riske Creek and Tl’esqox First Nation.

 

When and where

Burning is expected to begin as early as September 18, 2026, and may continue periodically until October 31.

The prescribed burn will cover approximately 29 hectares in size at the north end of Cotton Road near Riske Creek and Tl’esqox First Nation.

 

What to expect

Smoke and flames will be visible to motorists travelling along Highway 20, and may be visible to surrounding residences.

Crews will ignite forest fuels within pre-established boundaries to remove combustible materials.

Ignitions will only proceed with favorable weather and atmospheric venting, allowing smoke to clear quickly.

Personnel will remain on site until there is no risk of the fire spreading beyond the perimeter and return daily until the fire is out.

While burning is underway, traffic control may be on-site to ensure the safety of public and firefighters, short delays may occur.

Smoke from within the perimeter of the burn may be visible up to 72 hours after ignition.

Objectives of this prescribed burn

Reduce wildfire risk to the Tl’esqox First Nation and residences of Cotton Road and surrounding area.

Use fire to restore forest health to encourage a properly functioning ecosystem, improving the grassland forage for future wildlife and cattle grazing.

Strengthen collaboration between the Tl’esqox First Nation, the Cariboo-Chilcotin Natural Resource District - Range Branch and the Cariboo Fire Centre to grow capacity and knowledge for cultural and prescribed burning outside of emergency response situations.

To reduce the threat of wildfire the BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with the Williams Lake Fire Department, will conduct a wildfire risk reduction prescribed burn on Fox Mountain. This prescribed burn is a continuation of the 13 hectare fuel reduction treatment that was completed April 9, 2026.

When and where

• Burning will begin as early as Friday, April 24, continuing periodically until May 15.
• The prescribed burn will take place on approximately 20 hectares of land west of Eider Drive on the north side of Fox Mountain Road.

What to expect

• Smoke and flames will be visible to residents on Fox Mountain, from the City of Williams Lake and to motorists traveling Highway 97.
• Crews will ignite ground fuels to remove combustible materials.
• Ignitions will only proceed if conditions are safe, with favorable weather and atmospheric venting allowing smoke to clear quickly.
• While burning is underway portions of the Bearacouga Mountain Bike Trail will be restricted, signage will be placed on the trails as needed.
• While burning is underway, traffic control may be on site to ensure the safety of public and firefighters, short delays may occur.
• Personnel will remain on site until there is no risk of the fire spreading beyond the perimeter and return daily until the fire is out.
• Smoke from within the perimeter of the burn may be visible up to 72 hours after ignition.

Prescribed burn planned for Siwash, near Hanceville, BC (about 100 kms west of Williams Lake)

To help restore natural forest health and encourage a properly functioning ecosystem, we will be supporting the Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Resource District in conducting two prescribed burns in the Siwash area, approximately 100 kilometres to the west of Williams Lake.

The prescribed burn will take place on approximately 220 hectares of land west of the community of Yunisit'in and southwest of Alexis Creek, beginning as early as Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025 and continuing periodically until Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025 

Smoke and flames may be visible to nearby residents and motorists on Highway 20. Firefighters will closely monitor the fire activity at all times during the burn and will remain on-site to monitor conditions into the evening. The perimeter of the burn will be extinguished at the end of each day. Smoke from within the perimeter of the burn may be visible up to 72 hours after ignition.

The BC Wildfire Service, with support from the Horsefly Volunteer Fire Department, is planning a prescribed burn at the Horsefly River Spawning Channel to help reduce the threat of wildfires.

 

When and where

The burn will cover approximately two hectares at the Horsefly River Spawning Channel.

Burning will take place as early as Thursday, April 10, continuing periodically until Friday, April 18.

Ignitions will only proceed if conditions are safe, with favorable weather and atmospheric venting allowing smoke to clear quickly.

 

What to expect

Smoke and flames may be visible to the community of Horsefly.

Signage will be posted along Horsefly Lake Road for the duration of the burn.

Access to the Horsefly Wheelchair Accessible Salmon Habitat Viewing Trail will be restricted when ignitions are taking place.

Crews will ignite ground fuels to remove combustible materials.

The perimeter of the burn will be extinguished at the end of each day. Smoke from within the perimeter may remain visible up to 48 hours after ignition.

The BC Wildfire Service, in partnership with Williams Lake Community Forest and Williams Lake First Nation, will conduct a prescribed burn approximately 10 kilometres west of Williams Lake, north of Highway 20, beside the Fraser River. The prescribed burn will cover approximately 29 hectares within the Williams Lake Community Forest.

 

Burning is expected to begin as early as Thursday, February 27, 2025, and continue periodically until Sunday, March 2, 2025. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. Smoke may be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling on Highway 20.

 

This burn is a Wildfire Risk Reduction treatment to reduce juniper density and create a more fire resilient forest. Taking advantage of pre season conditions, low-to moderate-intensity spot fires will be lit within pre-established boundaries to remove combustible materials.

 

The BC Wildfire Service will be working with Williams Lake First Nation to prepare, control and monitor the prescribed burns. This is a continuation of a relationship with Williams Lake First Nation to grow capacity and knowledge for cultural and prescribed burning.

The B.C. Wildfire Service, in collaboration with Yunesit’in First Nation and the Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Regional District, will be conducting several prescribed burns totaling 270 hectares in size at roughly 18 kilometers on the Newton Whitewater Road (7000 Road).

 

Burning is expected to begin as early as October 2, 2024, and will continue periodically until October 31, 2024. Ignition will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. Smoke from this prescribed burn may be visible to commuters along Highway 20 from the Lees lookout (Hanceville rest area) to Puntzi Lake and Redstone, along the 900 road, and to the residences at Scum Lake.

 

The objective of this prescribed burn is to:

Increase forest health by eradicating Dwarf Mistletoe,

reduce fire hazard and,

prepare the site for replanting.

The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting the Williams Lake First Nation and the Cariboo Chilcotin Forest District in conducting a prescribed burn covering up to 50 hectares in the area surrounding the Thunder Mountain Speedway.

Burning is expected to begin as early as Sept. 23, 2024, and may continue periodically until Oct. 4, 2024. Ignition will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. Smoke may be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding communities and to motorists travelling along Highway 20, Dog Creek Road and Bond Lake Road.

This prescribed burn is a collaboration between Williams Lake First Nation, Alkali Resource Management, Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Resource District and BC Wildfire Service.

The objectives of this prescribed burn are to:

Reduce fuels for resilience to natural wildfire

Support previously completed fuel management treatments

Preparation for this project, including small scale burns to establish control lines, will begin as early as September 12, 2024. Burning may begin as early as September 13, 2024, and may continue periodically until September 20, 2024. The exact timing of the burn will be dependent on weather, site and venting conditions. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. Smoke and flames will be highly visible to motorists travelling along Highway 20, and may be visible to surrounding residences.

 

The objectives of this prescribed burn are to:

Improve and restore open grasslands by reducing encroachment from trees and shrubs,

consume slashed material,

improve the grassland forage for future wildlife and cattle grazing and,

 

This prescribed burn is part of an ongoing ecosystem restoration program administered in consultation with First Nations and local ranchers. B.C. Wildfire Service staff will carefully prepare, control, and monitor the prescribed burn at all times.

The BC Wildfire Service will be working in partnership with Williams Lake Community Forest and Williams Lake First Nation to conduct a prescribed burn approximately 10 kilometres west of Williams Lake beside the Fraser River. The prescribed burn will cover approximately 40 hectares within the Williams Lake Community Forest.

Burning is expected to begin March 30, 2024, and continue periodically until April 4, 2024. Ignitions will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. Smoke will be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding areas and to motorists travelling on Highway 20.

 This burn is the continuation of a spacing treatment that was previously completed to reduce stand density and create a more open and fire-resilient forest. A low- to moderate-intensity surface fire will be lit within pre-established boundaries to remove combustible materials and mimic a naturally occurring ground fire. The objective of the prescribed burn is to consume ground fuel and promote the growth of local plant species while reducing wildfire risk.

The BC Wildfire Service will be working on-site to prepare, control and monitor the fire. This project is a continuation of a relationship with Williams Lake First Nation to increase capacity and knowledge in cultural and prescribed burning

The BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with the City of Williams Lake and Williams Lake First Nation, plan to conduct two prescribed burns within the city of Williams Lake in efforts to reduce wildfire risk in the area.

These prescribed burns will cover a combined 10 hectares in the Stampede Park Grounds, Hillside Park located behind Lake City Secondary and the Gibbon Street park located near the water reservoir on Western avenue. Burning may begin as early as March 18, 2024 and continue periodically until March 21, 2024. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation.

A low intensity surface fire will be lit within pre-established boundaries to burn combustible materials and mimic a naturally occurring ground fire to reduce the risk of a wildfire spreading within city limits. BC Wildfire Service staff will be working with members of the Williams Lake Fire Department to prepare, control, and monitor the fires at all times. Smoke and flames will be visible in the city of Williams Lake and surrounding area.

While burning is underway, traffic control will be on-site to ensure the safety of public and firefighters, short delays may occur. Fires will be extinguished at the end of the day.

These prescribed burns will cover a combined 9.5 hectares in Boitanio Park and the Stampede Park Grounds. Burning may begin as early as April 4, 2023 and will continue periodically until April 21, 2023. Ignition will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation.

A low- to moderate-intensity surface fire will be lit within pre-established hose line boundaries to remove combustible materials and mimic a naturally occurring ground fire. BC Wildfire Service staff will be working with members of the Williams Lake Fire Department to carefully prepare, control, and monitor the fires at all times. Smoke and flames will be visible in the city of Williams Lake.

While burning is underway, traffic control will be on-site to ensure the safety of public and firefighters, short delays may occur. Fires will be extinguished at the end of the day with on-site monitoring for the evenings.

The intent of the prescribed burns is to reduce the risk of a wildfire spreading within city limits and to promote the growth of local plant species while reducing the spread of invasive plant species.

Prescribed Burn between Lee's Corner lookout and Chilanko Forks along Highway 20

The BC Wildfire Service in partnership with the Tsilhqot’in Nation communities, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, BC Parks - Cariboo Chilcotin Regional District and BC Hydro will be conducting a series of prescribed burns along Highway 20.

 

The goal of this prescribed burn is to reduce the fuel hazard to protect the infrastructure and prevent uncontrolled fires along the Highway 20 corridor for the Spring fire season without significantly impacting the occurrence of invasive species. Crews will be targeting high risk areas between Lee's Corner lookout and Chilanko Forks.

 

While burning is underway, traffic control will be on-site to ensure the safety of the public and firefighters.

 

Burning may begin as early as April 3, 2023, and will continue periodically until April 30, 2023.

The exact timing of the burn will be dependent on weather, site and venting conditions. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation.

 

Smoke and flames from this prescribed burn may be visible from Tsi Del Del, Yunesit’in, T’letinqox, Alexis Creek, Highway 20, and surrounding areas. Firefighters will closely monitor this fire at all times.

Prescribed Burn along Highway 20 near Bull Canyon Provincial Park (west of Alexis Creek)

The BC Wildfire Service in partnership with the Tŝilhqot’in communities, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, BC Parks, Cariboo-Chilcotin Natural Resource District and BC Hydro plans to continue a series of prescribed burns along the Highway 20 right-of-way.

 

This is a continuation of the prescribed burns that occurred in the spring of 2022 along Highway 20. Burning may begin as early as Oct. 12, 2022 and will continue periodically until Nov. 30, 2022. The exact timing of the burn will be dependent on weather, site and venting conditions. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation.

 

Over the next several weeks firefighters will burn in sections along the Highway 20 right-of-way from the Hanceville Lookout, westward to the western boundary of Tsiyi (Bull Canyon park).

 

Purpose of this prescribed burn:

• Remove combustible materials and mimic a naturally occurring ground fire within the right-of-way
• Protect infrastructure along a section of Highway 20
• Partner with Tŝilhqot’in fire crews to work together outside of emergency response activities and strengthen inter-agency coordination
• Monitor impact of fire on invasive species along the Highway 20 corridor
