A message from SD27 re: BCTF Full Strike

Editor's Note - more on this story from the Williams Lake Tribune here

For Elementary Schools:

The BCTF, the union representing teachers, has informed all school districts that they will be withdrawing teaching services in School District No. 27 beginning Monday, June 16. All School District No. 27 schools will be closed and buses will not run beginning Monday, June 16th. (Secondary schools will only be open for provincial exams, and these students will receive more information regarding this.)

Although Monday, June 16th is being called a “study session” day, teachers will not be at work. While there will be no pickets on this day, schools will be closed and buses will not run.

On Tuesday, June 17th, a full withdrawal of services will begin. Schools will be closed and buses will not run during this full withdrawal of service. We also expect that schools will be picketed beginning June 17th.
Due to the full withdrawal of teaching services, schools are considering Friday, June 13th as the last day for students for this school year. Students will be encouraged to clean out their desks and take home all of their school supplies. While there is a possibility that a provincial agreement could be reached and school could be back in session before the end of June, schools are planning as though students will not be back at school this year. Elementary students will not be receiving report cards for this term at this time.

Also, most programs will not be running in our district schools beginning Monday, June 16th

Programs not running include all StrongStart programs, before and after-school daycares, or use by community user groups. Full-day daycares which lease space in our school facilities may continue to operate. Please check with your full-day daycare provider to confirm the status of the daycare beginning Monday, June 16th.

This has been a very difficult time for everyone involved. We thank you for your continued patience. We will also continue to do our best to keep you informed in a timely manner. If a provincial agreement is reached or there is other emergent news, we will inform parents about the status of schools as quickly as we can through our School District No. 27 website (www.sd27.bc.ca) and local media outlets.

While students in grade 12 will be receiving report cards by mail, students in Kindergarten to grade 11 will not be receiving report cards for this term at this time.

Provincial Exams will continue as originally scheduled

Provincial exams for students in grades 10-12 will continue as originally scheduled with management invigilating the exams. Teachers will not be picketing the main entrances of our secondary schools during exam times so that students will be able to complete exams without needing to cross picket lines. Unfortunately, the district will not be providing bus transportation to and from exams, so students and their parents are responsible for this transportation. Students living in remote parts of the Cariboo-Chilcotin may be able to complete exams at their neighborhood schools and should contact these schools to inquire. Students are requested to leave schools immediately following exams due to lack of supervision.
