Voters reject borrowing for North Cariboo Pool Upgrades

Joint Release - City of Quesnel/Cariboo Regional District:

The ballots have been counted, and the referendum results are in – voters have turned down the Cariboo Regional District’s proposal to borrow $35 million for the proposed upgrades at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre, with 1,085 “yes” votes and 1,664 no votes, with a minor increase in voter turnout.

“I want to thank all those people who marked their Ballot letting the Cariboo Regional District and the City of Quesnel know that you do not want a major upgrade to the pool at this time. We thank everyone who took the time to vote,” said Electoral Area "B" Director Barb Bachmeier, the CRD spokesperson for the referendum. Director Bachmeier added that “The North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee will review this decision and find ways to do any required infrastructure upgrades that are necessary to keep our pool working properly.”

"It is crucial to consider the diverse perspectives and needs of our community. Through thoughtful discussion and collaboration, we can work towards finding a solution that benefits everyone and strengthens our community for years to come," said Councillor Laurey-Anne Roodenburg, the City of Quesnel spokesperson for the referendum.

In light of the outcome, the North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee will review and consider options to address the future needs of the 40-year-old facility.
