The City of Williams Lake has rescinded its campfire ban within City limits, effective immediately.
The ban, which was implemented on April 24, 2026, has been lifted following guidance from the Cariboo Fire Centre, improved weather conditions and increased availability of firefighting resources throughout the region.
Evan Dean, Director of Protective Services and Fire Chief, said the decision reflects current fire conditions and aligns with the recent rescinding of the Category 1 campfire prohibition by the BC Wildfire Service throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre.
“When the ban was introduced in April, it was in response to unusually dry conditions and several human-caused fires in the community,” Dean said. “With cooler temperatures, recent precipitation and greater resource availability across the province, conditions have improved to the point where the ban can now be safely lifted.”
Residents are reminded that campfires must be used responsibly and always attended to. Anyone who has a campfire should ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
A campfire is defined as a fire no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide and used for recreational purposes.
While the campfire ban has been rescinded, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as weather conditions and fire hazards can change quickly. The Williams Lake Fire Department will continue to monitor local conditions throughout the remainder of the fire season.
