WL News -- May 1st edition

1) Taseko Mines seeks to exclude local Aboriginal traditions at the upcoming Federal Review Panel hearing on 'New Prosperity'- read here.  For myself, this was a 'strategic mistake' on Taseko Mines part and as a supporter of 'New Prosperity' - this will only seek to widen the gap between those for 'New Prosperity' and those against it.  I understand their frustration to get 'New Prosperity' up and running, but seeking to exclude local First Nation practices at Federal Review Panel Hearings is not the best way to get this project approved

2) Day of Mourning held last Saturday - read here
3) Vaisakhi Day in Williams Lake this past Sunday - read here
4) New motorcycle helmet regulations coming - read here
5) Car set ablaze early this morning - read here
6) Local animal breeder speaks out on proposed animal bill - read here
7) Top RCMP Traffic Cop supports new motorcycle helmet rule -read here
8) Charlie Wyse asks Ottawa to reconsider their stance on CAP (Internet) Funding - read here
9) Local Boston Pizza GM takes no issue with rise of mininum wage to $10.25 today - read here
10) Local cancer fundraiser 'big success' - read here

Also this morning - the Williams Lake Tribune has switched a fair portion of their online news to a paid subscription model.  If you have a paid 'paper' subscription, then online access is free.  No paper subscription... you have to pay for access to the online version.  Interesting that national papers have tried this and have largely reverted back to almost full access - both paper/electronic versions

Finally - in BC Political News...

1) Mike McDonald to take over the BC Liberal Party reins as we get closer to the 2013 BC Election - read here

2) My uncle takes a look at the BC Debt situation from 1991-2012 - read here.  However, I would point out that a large portion of that debt is to allow for an expanding population (primarly in the Metro Van area) and wonder what projects a BC Conservative gov't would say no to - schools, hospitals??

I don't think it's the desire of the Conservatives or any other political party to cut funding to schools and hospitals. The point I believe your uncle, and the Conservatives, are trying to make is that at the end of the day we cannot keep spending money we don't have. Where does the deficit balloon to before we end up like Greece and EVERYTHING comes to a halt.
This debt is borrowed money folks, eventually someone will want it back. Spending such a big portion of our tax dollars to make interest payments isn't really the best way to make the most of our tax dollars.
We NEED to cut back all non essential services pay back this debt and then use our tax money for what it's meant for. In essence schools, hospital, police and infastructure.
As much as the well to do folks like to bang the arts and culture/parks and recreation drum, I would rather see more teachers and nurses and less grants for these non essential hobbies.
I'm not a Conservative or a Liberal, I'm a realist. Time for the public to open their eyes.
