The Williams Lake Harvest Fair (WLHF) brings Cariboo-Chilcotin communities together to celebrate the best of the season and generates collective memories that span generations.
Unfortunately, the WLHF Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the 43rd annual event, which was scheduled for September 12 and 13, 2020.
“We know people could really use the love the Fair brings to this community,” said Board President, Tammy Tugnum. “But, following the directive of provincial health authorities, we want to do our part to contribute to hopefully turning the tide on the advancement of this virus.”
While much can change between now and September, Tugnum acknowledged that the planning and organizing of the fair cannot be done at the last minute. The Board of Directors agreed it was unfair to seek sponsorship from local businesses and fellow citizens who have been hit hard by the pandemic. “The fair depends heavily on the always-generous sponsorship of our community, and while everyone hopes the restrictions will be lifted long before September, public safety and wellness have been and will always remain our priority.”
The group of dedicated volunteers is committed to continue to ‘meet’ online, and perhaps in person when that becomes an option, to brainstorm ideas for next year’s event.
During discussion, each member of the WLHF Board expressed their ardor at celebrating with the community in the future when the time is right. “As much as it hurts, it’s really the only choice we have,” acknowledges WLHF Director Marg Bublitz. “ We’re sad, but we will just have to make 2021 a Fair to remember!”
