Upcoming Work at Scout Island from April 7 to May 2, 2025

The City of Williams Lake would like to remind residents and visitors that excavation work will be taking place at Scout Island from April 7 to May 2, 2025, between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm.

During this time traffic and pedestrian access may be impacted, and there may be delays.

The work is part of exploratory excavation for the new Water Treatment Plant and will affect areas including the causeway, parking lot and picnic area.

Please respect all signage and traffic control personnel and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

The City appreciates the community's patience and cooperation during this important project.

City of Williams Lake installs Wheelchair Ramp at Scout Island Dock

Visitors to the Scout Island boat launch this summer and fall will notice a new addition to the amenities.

The City of Williams Lake, in collaboration with the Williams Lake Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), recently installed a wheelchair ramp at the Scout Island dock. The ramp is part of an ongoing City initiative to create a fully-accessible boat launch for residents and visitors alike.

“Any barriers the City can remove that helps residents and visitors to our community enjoy all Williams Lake has to offer is a move in the right direction,” said Williams Lake Mayor Walt Cobb. “As the hometown of Rick Hansen we want to make our City as accessible as possible, and we hope this will allow more and more people the ability to go boating on Williams Lake with family, friends or on their own.”

The new wheelchair ramp is removable during winter months and will be installed annually each spring when the dock enters the water at the Scout Island boat launch.

Maureen Straza, Chair of the AAC, said the new ramp will be a major improvement for anyone attempting to access the dock by wheelchair. She added the new accessible ramp should allow access for almost everyone.

“I’d like to encourage people to come down to check it out and if there are any issues to please let us know,” Straza said. “I’m very happy. This is forward progress for the community and all we can do is to continue to add accessibility improvements one step at a time.”
