Saturday News - May 3rd edition

Today - the City of Williams Lake will be hosting its' 85th birthday with events all day long.  You can find more information here

Meanwhile in the news…

a) WL Council approves in principle its' 2014 budget which calls for a 3% property tax hike in 2014 (3 Readings of the 2014 Budget Bylaw) by a 4-3 vote - read more here

Editor's Note - there will be a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday to adopt the 2014 Budget Bylaw and to give 3 Readings to the 2014 Tax Rates Bylaw.  Meeting will occur at 5pm in WL Council Chambers.  There is no plan by WL Council to hold a public meeting on the final 2014 City Budget.  Councillor Ivan Bonnell asks the public to let their City elected officials know how they feel about this budget which calls for a 3% tax hike in 2014.  You can get email addresses for WL Council here  Please note I have already let Council know myself how I feel on the City's budget which is, on balance, that the 2014 budget is good overall for the City

b) Kevin Goldfuss leaves the City of Williams Lake after 28 years of service to the City - read here

c) WL Council discusses access to lakefront after approving no parking signs along Dutch Point Rd (subject to approval of CN Rail) - read here

d) Williams Lake Indian Band Chief Ann Louie makes an impassioned plea to WL Council to address racism that is occurring in the community and in social media, especially after the rejection of 'New Prosperity' and the recent win by the WL Indian Band in their "Specific Land Claim" process - read more here

Editor's Note - I have approached CRD Chair Al Richmond and requested that an invite go out to Chief Louie and request that she make the same presentation to the Cariboo Regional District Board

e) The community of Alexis Creek escapes disaster after an accidental fire was set off but thanks to the quick work of Wildfire Management Branch crews - the fire was put out quickly.  An 18 year old has been arrested and the RCMP have recommended a charge of arson be filed against the 18 year old.  This incident only serves to remind us in the entire region how dry it is right now and we aren't in prime wildfire season yet and we need to be extremely careful with fire between now and October.  In fact - the Kamloops Fire Centre will prohibit Open Fires as of May 15th and I expect that the Cariboo Fire Centre will likely consider doing the same here in the not too distant future.

Read more here and here and read the Open Fire prohibition notice from the Kamloops Fire Centre here

f) Mining Associations join Taseko Mines over court battle after rejection of 'New Prosperity' - read here

g) Tribune columnist Ken Wilson looks at the recent post-secondary changes by the BC Liberals which includes a bigger focus on the trades - read here

h) Professional Agrologist and Forester Jim Hilton looks at the controversy over Area Based Tenure in his weekly column here

Interesting how Mr.Goldfuss is the first causualty of the Dugald Smith report into City of WL working conditions.Iwas one of those interviewed in the process and am surprised that Kevin was the first to fall on his sword.

Thanks for your comments….

Anonymous at 9:55am:

The report referred to by 'Roy' was a report I understand that was requested by City of WL Administration as a follow-up from the 2013 City of WL Civic strike by unionized City employees to find ways to improve morale between unionized staff/City of WL Management

As a report of this nature is typically classified as an 'employee' issue - the report is never made public UNLESS someone privy to the report leaks it to the public or both sides agree to make it public
