Smoke visible from pile burning near #Quesnel

Courtesy of the BC Wildfire Service:

The BC Wildfire Service plans to burn piles of woody debris west of Quesnel as part of a wildfire risk reduction project.

Burning will take place periodically between March. 4,  2021 and October. 31, 2021 (or until all of the piles are burned). The decision on when to burn will depend on weather, site and venting conditions. Such burns are only conducted when conditions are suitable, and they must comply with the Open Burning and Smoke Control Regulation to limit the impact on air quality in nearby communities.

BC Wildfire Service personnel will be on site to control and monitor the burn piles.

This project will take place about 10 kilometers west of downtown Quesnel, near the junction of Marsh Road and Abbott Drive. Smoke from the piles may be visible from Quesnel and surrounding areas.

The piles were created as part of a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development fuel management project in the spring of 2020.  Burning the debris mitigates the risk of wildfires in interface areas (where urban development borders on forested areas).
