According
to Clean Team and Day Labour Programs Support Worker partnerships, the program
has not only improved the amount of garbage and paraphernalia in our community
but has also improved the isolation and stigma many peers experience. Support
Workers have witnessed the peers create new social and emotional connections –
explaining that this stems from the peers feeling a sense of purpose and
appreciation for their work.
As
the Support workers recognize the gaps and barriers many peers experience in
seeking employment, there is a huge appreciation for the program – as it hires
those who may have been excluded from the workforce, due to issues of
homelessness and/or substance use. Since the program has been operational,
Support Workers have seen the program improve peers’ level of health, financial
security, mental health, quality of life, daily functioning, and
self-sufficiency; among other benefits.
The
program is funded through UBCM Strengthening Communities’ Services. This
program has been a huge success for the peers, City, local businesses and
community.
