Truth and Reconciliation banners will be displayed every September in Quesnel

Courtesy of the City of Quesnel:

Orange Every Child Matters banners have been installed in the downtown core. The banners will be displayed annually in September to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.

The banner was designed in partnership with Lhtako Dene First Nation using the Orange Shirt Society Every Child Matters logo. The banners commemorate the residential school experience and reaffirm that the survivors and the ones left behind matter.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools.

The City is also working on other projects with local First Nations including:

  • Lhtako Dene Park – Waterfront Cultural Interpretation Project
  • Tsilhqot’in Chiefs War Memorial at the north end of G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital
  • Residential School Pavilion in the amphitheater park next to City Hall
  • Community Forest Application between the City of Quesnel, Lhtako Dene, Nazko, ?Esdilagh, and Lhoosk’uz Dené First Nations
