Workforce Attraction

Recognizing that locally, employers are struggling to fill positions of all types, in 2022 the City launched a Workforce Attraction marketing campaign and created a series of videos and social media content to attract people to fill skilled positions.

The videos are available as a playlist on the @ExploreQuesnel YouTube channel. A social media campaign also ran featuring three of the videos.

The videos and associated social media campaigns directed viewers to a landing page www.quesnel.ca/work with links to more job opportunities

FireSmart Season

Three of the past six wildfire seasons have been severe – 2012, 2018 and 2021. 2021 alone observed 61 Wildfires of Note.

  • A Wildfire of Note is a fire that is particularly visible or poses a threat to public safety.

B.C. is experiencing an increase in extreme wildfire behaviour in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), which is the zone of transition between wildland forest and human development. The lands and communities next to and surrounded by wildlands are at risk of wildfires.

The importance of FireSmart activities has grown to help protect homes and properties. in 2022, FireSmart initiatives included outreach, home assessments, a neighbourhood recognition program, fuel reduction, literature, presentations, and signage.

The 2023 season will include outreach, home assessments & rebates, farm & ranch assessments & rebates, a neighbourhood recognition program, fuel reduction, literature/signage, presentations, door-to-door and a public meeting. Neighborhoods such as South Hills and areas of North Quesnel will be targeted.

Dragon Lake Hill Prescribed Burn

Representatives from the BC Wildfire Service will be leading a prescribed burn of the Northstar Interchange in the fall of 2023 to reduce the potential of fires (both wildfire and human-caused) spreading to adjacent private properties, infrastructure, and timber.

This activity will facilitate better coordination, and communication and allow training between the Quesnel Fire Department and British Columbia Wildfire Services resources and introduce the public to the use of prescribed fires.

The team will collaborate with local First Nations, working alongside BC Wildfire Service and the Quesnel Fire Department members, to carry out the burn in 2023 and in future years to follow.

Quesnel Tillicum Society Bylaw Extension

Council approved a 6-month extension to the Quesnel Tillicum Society for Bylaw 1905, expiring October 19, 2023. The proposed bylaw is to create a new comprehensive development zone to allow a multi-unit residential development on a consolidated lot with the existing Friendship Centre building, daycare and catering business.
