Update from the Cariboo Fire Centre -- September 14th, 2023

1) General Overview

The Cariboo Fire Centre experienced lower temperatures and higher relative humidity and is now entering back into warm, dry conditions across the Fire Centre. The Build-Up Index values will be trending higher and Relative Humidity Values trending lower in the Western region of the Fire Centre with high winds anticipated.
 
In the Chilcotin Zone, fire C52978 had an Evacuation Alert that was upgraded to an Evacuation Order on September 11th by the Cariboo Regional District and fire C53189 had an Evacuation Alert put in place by the Cariboo Regional District on September 11th. The Cariboo Fire Centre's Category 1 campfire prohibition was partially rescinded On September 7th. Campfires are now permitted in the Quesnel Forest District, 100 Mile House Forest District and the section of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Forest District to east side of the high-water mark of the Fraser River. A reminder that in the areas where campfires are now permitted under BC Wildfire Service jurisdiction, local governments may still have their own bylaws in place, so always check with the municipality, First Nation or other local authority before lighting a fire of any size.
 
Category 2 and 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre and the Tsilhqot’in (Xeni Gwet’in) Declared Title Area Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
 
The following activities and equipment are also restricted:
Fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, binary exploding targets, tiki and similar kinds of torches, chimineas and air curtain burners.

3) Current Active Fires

Quesnel Zone: There is one active fire in the Quesnel Zone.

C11290 (Townsend Creek) is 2,785 hectares and classified as Under Control
G41560, G11293 and G41158 started in the Prince George Fire Centre, and have moved south into the Quesnel Zone. They have been managed by the Prince George Fire Centre since the Kappan Complex was dissolved.
 
Central Cariboo Zone: There are nine active fires within the Central 
Cariboo Zone.

C30399, C31143, C31349, C31442, C31684, C32266, and C32539 are located in the Horsefly Lake-Quesnel Lake area, are classified as Being Held and are being handled with a modified response.
C33245 is 5 hectares in size and classified as Being Held.
C30446 is located in the Horsefly Lake – Quesnel Lake area, classified as Under Control and are being handled with a modified response.
 
 
Chilcotin Zone: There are eight active fires within the Chilcotin Zone.

C51562 (Satah Mountain) is 6,652 hectares and is classified as Under Control.
C51571 (Anahim Peak) is 3350 hectares and is classified as Under Control.
C51974 (Bull Canyon Park) is 1,306 hectares and classified as Under Control.
C51981 is 1,400 hectares and classified as Under Control.
C52978 is 500 hectares and Out of Control.
C53002, located on the Chilko River, is 1,235 hectares and Under Control.
C53184, located east of Towdystan Lake, is 1 hectare and Under Control.
C53189, located on Hell Raving Creek, is estimated to be 200? hectares and Out of Control.
 
100 Mile Zone: There are no active fires within the 100 Mile Zone.
 
"Out of Control": The fire is not contained, and still has potential to spread.
"Being Held": Under current fire conditions, such as wind and weather, the fire is not expected to grow.
"Under control": The fire is not expected to grow any larger.

4) Weather Outlook 

A weak ridge will bring stable conditions today across the fire centre. Lower humidity values are expected in the Chilcotin with near cross over conditions forecast. On Friday a cold front will move through northern BC bringing gusty southwesterly winds over the fire centre. Very high ISI values are forecast as humidity values in the 15-25% range are expected with higher windspeeds on Friday afternoon. No precipitation is forecasted with this system.

5) Status of Fire Prohibition

* Category 2/3 Open Fire Ban still in place
* Campfires allowed for those areas EAST of the Fraser River but still prohibited in the Chilcotin (areas WEST of the Fraser River)
