From Interior Health:
The Master Site Plan process for Cariboo Memorial Hospital is progressing
well, building on input received at a recent community Open House as well as numerous
meetings and design workshops which have been held over the past four months to gain input
from hospital user groups.
“I am pleased to see the high level of community interest in this project which will project future
patient demand and help us develop a road map to meet the long term health care needs of area
residents,” said Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett.
The consultation process includes every department on site at CMH with input from
administrative and frontline staff and physicians. Meetings have also occurred with City of
Williams Lake Mayor and Council. The community information session brought a broad cross
section of community representatives together including MLAs, Mayors, Interior Health Board
Members, the Regional District, Chamber of Commerce, community group representatives,
emergency services, as well as neighbours living around the hospital site.
"Our goal is to ensure we hear directly from the people working in the hospital, the people who
live and work near the facility, community leaders and people who access the services we
provide," said Interior Health Board Chair Norman Embree. "It is important that we obtain a high
degree of personal input to complement the workload and staffing data and the demographics
and population forecasts that the consultants have been poring over."
Some of the elements guiding the development of the Master Plan include site opportunities and
constraints, maximizing flexibility for future program expansion, and alignment with the integrated
continuum of care with the community programs at the Health Unit.
“The working sessions have really let us hone in on what’s important to hospital staff, physicians
and the community, and using a three dimensional model really helps us understand the space
requirements and our options for redevelopment,” said Allison Ruault, Health Services
Administrator for Cariboo Memorial.
Formal completion of the plan, which has been funded by the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional
Hospital District, is expected in the Spring 2011. At that time a second community information
session will be scheduled to showcase the options resulting from the Master Site Plan and
opportunities for the long term future of health care on this seven acre (3 hectare) site.
Farrow Partnership Architects was awarded the Master Plan development contract in June which
will guide development at Cariboo Memorial over the next five, 10, and 15 years.
Farrow is a Canadian firm based in Toronto with a strong focus on health care settings. The
firm’s roots extend back to 1958. It has since evolved into a world leader in creating exceptional
health-focused architecture.
