Blessings Grave and Stanley Cemetery Receive Accessible Upgrades

From the Cariboo Regional District:

The Blessings Grave Historic Site and the Stanley Cemetery are the most recent points of interest in the north Cariboo to receive some accessible upgrades. The upgrades were officially celebrated in a news conference today at the historic sites.

Earlier this year, the Cariboo Regional District gave authorization to use a total of $2,500 of Electoral Area C Opportunity Funds to purchase an accessible washroom for the Blessings Grave site, while Recreation Sites and Trails BC of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations donated an accessible washroom for the Stanley Cemetery site. Highways contractor, HMC Services also agreed to partner in this project by providing the installation of the washrooms at Blessings Grave and Stanley Cemetery.

The project was initiated by the Friends of Barkerville historical society, who chose and prepared the sites and will facilitate the ongoing maintenance through the CRD. The small historic site marks the grave of an early miner that was murdered on his way to Barkerville. The Cariboo Regional District, in collaboration with Recreation Sites and Trails BC recognized the value of the two sites as regional trails and support to the tourism industry.

“I am extremely pleased that we have now completed the Blessings Grave Historic Site and Trail,” stated CRD Electoral Area C Director John Massier. “Working with the various government ministries, agencies, contractors and the Friends of Barkerville has helped us expand access of this site to people of all mobilities and to help preserve our heritage for both residents and tourists to enjoy.”

Both the Blessings Grave and the Stanley Cemetery see heavy summer tourism traffic from people visiting Barkerville and Cottonwood House and will be appreciated by participants in events such as the annual Barkerville Rush Relay run in May and the Gold Rush Cycling Club's Mountain Caribou Migration road ride in August.

Blessings Grave Historic Site and Stanley Cemetery are located on Highway 26, approximately half a kilometre before the Troll Ski Resort

Hello. Does this mean that work to restore the Stanley Cemetery will continue? The graves are in ok condition but the main fence around the cemetery is in bad need of repair.

I'm not aware of this project personally but I have forwarded your concern to CRD Area 'C' Director John Massier and hopefully he'll follow up on it in the next few days

My family and I visit the Stanley Cemetary several times a year and agree fully that the fence surrounding the site is in need of much repair. Because we know several deceased persons at this site it would be so appreciated if this work could be done so that it is a secure site for all who wish to visit.

Work at the Stanley Cemetery is being done right now. The fence is being replaced and the grounds cleaned up by putting footpaths to the site. A washroom has been erected as well. Thank-you to whomever is doing the necessary work and for recognizing it's importance of history to this region.
