Editor's Note - I fully applaud this effort by the Cariboo Regional District and hope that they are successful as the firefighter in question deserves recognition as do all of our rural volunteer firefighters
The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) and the Deka Lake Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) received confirmation that volunteer fire fighter Ken Rowe’s passing in April of this year, has been recognized as a line of duty death by Worksafe BC. Mr. Rowe served as a member of the Deka Lake Volunteer Fire Department for the past 13 years.
An application is being submitted to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) by the CRD to have Mr. Rowe included in the CFFF memorial list and annual ceremonies. If accepted, his name will be read during the 2014 ceremony in Ottawa and placed as a permanent record on the list of the fallen fire fighters. Mr. Rowe’s name will also be submitted for inclusion on the new fire fighter memorial that was erected in Victoria, in 2012.
“Ken was a friend and well-respected member of the fire department that I could always count on; he always answered the call to help his neighbour, to respond when needed, and to step up and help when others might step back,” states Deka Lake VFD Fire Chief Al Boyce.
“The Cariboo Regional District is proud to honour a man, who honoured his role as a volunteer fire fighter,” says CRD Chair Al Richmond. “His dedication to firefighting and to the Deka Lake Volunteer Fire Department is a testament to his character and his commitment to the community.”
