Earlier this year - Quesnel Councillors L-A Roodenburg, Mike Cave, Scott Elliot, Ed Coleman and John Brisco were personally sued by Quesnel individuals relating to the final severance payment to former Quesnel City Manager John Stecyk totalling roughly $170,000. Now - Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom has been served with lawsuit papers alleging that she voted to authorize the payment to Mr. Stecyk contrary to Section 191 of the Community Charter. Read more here
Meanwhile - Mayor Sjostrom responds to the expanded lawsuit concerning Mr. Stecyk which involves every member of Quesnel Council except Councillor Sushil Thapar. Read more here
With roughly a year to go before the next general election for local governments in British Columbia - I have to agree with Mary Sjostrom - this lawsuit is a waste of time/money and efforts would have been better served next fall in local election in Quesnel on the basis that if you don't like the efforts of the current Quesnel Council - then, by all means, go out and try to get your preferred candidate for Quesnel Mayor/Councillor elected.
Meanwhile - I'm personally concerned about the negative consequences (media and otherwise) that this lawsuit will have on Quesnel's reputation - both local, regional, provincial, federal and even international ...
