Last Wednesday (and I apologize to my blog readers' that I wasn't able to attend, due to emergency work commitments) - the City of Williams Lake hosted a public information meeting on its' Place Branding Initiative
From those whom I talked with that I know who went to the meeting - it seems my previous concerns with this meeting where justified - the City attempted to justify its' branding efforts, rather than have a honest conversation about what measures the City can take to bring individuals to our City and region - in other words - focus on the problems and not mask them
This is confirmed in yesterday's Williams Lake Tribune with quotes like:
Marg Bublitz -- We're here because we care. Madrigga needs to get out more and meet with people of Willliams Lake
Donna Ford -- Why isn't this project (branding) being done in-house?
Peter Epp, Sr -- If the end game is to attract people to Williams Lake, then Mayor/Council needs to quit wasting taxpayers' money & keep taxes down in order to permit people to afford to live in Williams Lake
Doug Wilson - we need jobs here in order to woo the 30-somethings here
Brian Garland -- people who live here are the best ambassadors.
I and many others, I suspect, will be interested in seeing what Alan Madrigga, the Manager of Economic Development for the City of WL, reports back on next steps on Place Branding for the City, given the huge majority rejecting the "Republic of Life" brand
Finally - Alan Madrigga talks with CBC Daybreak Kamloops about the meeting last Wednesday. You can decide if Mr. Madrigga accurately reflects what took place at the meeting by listening to the interview here
