The results for the referendum (assent vote) held on Saturday, June 9, 2018, are now official. A total of 2,205 residents cast their ballots with 74 per cent of residents saying no to the proposed expansion of the South Cariboo Recreation Centre.
Residents and property owners within the South Cariboo Recreation Service Area voted to determine whether to give the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) permission to borrow $10 million towards the expansion of the South Cariboo Recreation Centre, which translates into a residential tax rate increase of up to $65 per $100,000 on the assessed value of land and improvements.
Residents voted on the following question:
“Are you in favour of the Cariboo Regional District adopting Bylaw 5130, which will authorize the borrowing of up to $10 million over 20 years to build an indoor field, hard court gymnasium and walking track at the South Cariboo Recreation Centre; and
Bylaw 5129, which will increase the South Cariboo Recreation Service annual taxation limit to a maximum of the greater of $1,800,000 or $1.57/$1,000 of assessed value of land and improvements?
(The estimated annual cost to undertake this borrowing and operate the upgraded facility translates to a residential tax rate increase of approximately $65 per $100,000 of net taxable assessed value of land and improvements.)”
The South Cariboo Joint Committee met Monday, June 11, to discuss the preliminary referendum results. They passed a resolution to evaluate and discuss next steps for recreation projects during the CRD’s 2019 business and financial planning process for the South Cariboo Recreation service. That process will take place in the fall of 2018.
“I am pleased with the voter turnout for the referendum and glad that the result was definitive. We wanted the public have their say on this project and the direction is very clear,” states project working group Co-Chair and District of 100 Mile House Councillor, Ralph Fossum.
“We know the question on everyone’s mind now is ‘what next,’” says Margo Wagner, working group Co-Chair and CRD Chair. “We on the South Cariboo Joint Committee feel we need to take a strategic look at our recreation priorities in the South Cariboo. With an election coming up this October, it makes sense to have this discussion as part of our business planning process in the fall after the election.”
The Cariboo Regional District’s Chief Election Officer declared the following results at 2:10 p.m. today, June 12. Two scrutineer volunteers were present during general voting at the 108 Mile Elementary School and District of 100 Mile Council Chambers polling stations.

Located in 100 Mile House, the South Cariboo Recreation Centre is owned by the Cariboo Regional District and funded through the South Cariboo Recreation service, which covers portions of Electoral Areas G, H and L and the District of 100 Mile House. The CRD has a contract with Canlan Ice Sports to manage the property and day-to-day operations.
