The Province and the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) have reaffirmed their commitment to working together toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in British Columbia.
“A fundamental truth of reconciliation is the need to work together to right past wrongs and move forward in a direction that will benefit everyone,” said Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. “This agreement strengthens the partnership between our government, municipalities and Indigenous communities so we can take that journey together.”
A renewed memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and UBCM underscores the importance of the provincial government’s relationship with local governments in fulfilling the commitment to reconciliation. It now supports working in partnership with Indigenous peoples in B.C. and in implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
“Local governments are a key partner in the Province’s efforts for reconciliation with Indigenous peoples,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This agreement affirms the importance of strong relationships between all levels of government that are needed to gain a better understanding of Indigenous priorities and begin the process of true reconciliation that benefits everyone.”
In addition to reflecting governments’ commitments to reconciliation, the MOU reaffirms both parties’ commitment to regular discussions on matters that affect local government jurisdictions, including treaty negotiations and non-treaty agreements, as well as other initiatives with Indigenous communities.
The agreement highlights the need for local governments to continue developing relationships at a grassroots level with Indigenous governments and communities to create conversations and partnerships that will benefit everyone at the community level.
“The level of consultation that has gone into the renewal of this MOU gives us confidence that its intent will be fulfilled,” said Wendy Booth, UBCM President. “We welcome a stronger collaborative relationship in the vital undertaking of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and are ready to fulfil our role in this partnership.”
