Electronic Council Meetings
All Quesnel City Council meetings will be held electronically, using video and/or audio technology, to protect the health and safety of elected officials, municipal employees and the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. These electronic meetings are permitted under the March 26, 2020 Order of the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General M083. Media representatives will receive electronic invitations prior to electronic Council meetings. The draft Meeting Minutes, and the audio recording, for each Special Electronic Council meeting will be posted on the Agenda/Minutes page of the City's website. The video recording for the March 31, 2020 Special Electronic Council meeting is now available on the City's website.
Airport Lease - Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resources and Rural Development
Council approved a five-year Lease with Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development for the lease of approximately 1 hectare of land at the Quesnel Regional Airport. The BC Wildfire Service has plans to expand its operations and to decentralize the Cariboo Fire Center in Williams Lake in order to provide a more community based response to wildfires in the region. The Wildfire Service anticipate that an additional 3-5 Initial Attack crews will be moved to Quesnel between 2020 – 2021 that will require additional accommodations at the airport leased base.
Façade Improvement Program Update
In 2019, five local businesses completed façade improvements partly funded by the $20,000 Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) Façade Improvement Grant Program (Grant Program). The five businesses that made improvements to their business facades in 2019 are:
- Chow Holdings; Quesnel Bakery, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Subway (468 Reid Street)
- Booster Juice (454 Reid Street)
- Eagle Home Building Centre (172 Reid Street)
- Rocky Peak Outfitters (337 Reid Street)
- Holley Clinic (348 Front Street)
Over the past seven years, 28 businesses have completed façade improvements through this Grant Program receiving just over $117,000.
The City has received approval from NDIT for another $20,000 Façade Improvement Grant Program for 2020, and is currently accepting applications.
Council Procedure Bylaw Amendments – Electronic Meetings
Council approved the first three readings of the proposed Quesnel City Council Procedure Bylaw 1889 that will allow for all of Council to participate in electronic meetings during a Provincial and/or Local State of Emergency. Council approved alternative means of advertising these proposed changes on the City’s website, City’s social media channels and at City Hall Public Posting Areas to expedite the process during the COVID-19 pandemic.
