From the City of Williams Lake:
A new pedestrian/bicycle lane on South Mackenzie Avenue will provide a safe link from Highway 20 to Scout Island.
The two-metre wide lane, which is functional now and will be completed this week, runs from DG’s Car Wash to Highway 97 South, and completes a pedestrian link from Highway 97 South to Soda Creek Road.
Concrete barriers will separate the 680-metre lane, on the north side of Mackenzie Avenue, from vehicle lanes.
“This lane addresses a long-standing concern,” says Kevin Goldfuss, Director of Municipal Services. “There was never a safe pedestrian connection from Highway 20 to Scout Island.”
At the access from Mackenzie Avenue to Scout Island, solar-powered, pedestrian-activated flashing lights will be installed at the crosswalk within the next two weeks. These lights will be similar to those elsewhere in the city, such as at the intersection of Oliver Street and 5th Avenue.
The pedestrian/bicycle lane is part of the Mackenzie Avenue improvements, and is in addition to the 1,700 metres of concrete sidewalk installed from DG’s Car Wash to Comer St.
“This is a really big step forward for the whole community to have this access,” says Sue Zacharias, Chair of the Development Services and Public Works Portfolio. “Cyclists and pedestrians will now be able to safely access Scout Island, and there are a total of 2.4 kilometres of new sidewalks and lanes along Mackenzie Avenue.”
The pedestrian/bicycle lane has a cost of $90,000.
