Candidates for SD #27 Zone 3 (100 Mile)

Holly Davidson:

Davidson cites her main experience as being Secretary for the 100 Mile Elementary PAC for the last two years. She heads the fundraising committee there as well.

Davidson does want to make one thing specifically clear:

“I know against my opponent I don’t have a lot of experience, but I make that up in determination, time and passion for it.”

We asked Davidson about the current Initial Options Report (IOR) as it stands and she says realistically with the amount of money currently being lost and the amount of money that could potentially be saved, it’s probably the best idea to close 100 Mile Junior.

She’s a little more tentative on the closure of Buffalo Creek but says the fact they use a well for some of their water is a good thing to consider when it comes to deciding whether or not to close that school.

Currently at Buffalo Creek Elementary, the Parents’ Advisory Committee purchases bottled water for drinking purposes.

Finally, Davidson tells us why she is running.

“I’m a mother of four; I think we as parents need to speak up for our children’s educational opportunities and keep them open as well. I want to be part of the solution. My oldest daughter is part of those grade 7 students that would be immediately affected.”

She says she wants to be, “…the voice of the people.”

Chris Pettman:

Pettman currently sits on five boards in the area, two of which he Chairs. Those would be the Friendship Centre Society and Canadian Parents for French.

He also sits on the South Cariboo Community Planning Council, the Canim Lake Economic Development Corporation and the Agricultural Enterprise Centre.

He tells us why he’d be great for the job.

“I think I’d bring a real good long term insight to the Board. I do have the goals and representation of 100 Mile House at heart. They really need someone from 100 Mile House who feels passionate about our community.”

Pettman says he’s trying to be realistic about the current proposal from the District with regards to closing the Junior in 100 Mile and Buffalo Creek and that it’d be really easy to just say because of economics and the number of students, it should be closed.

He says however, it really isn’t that easy when there are so many people on both sides of the coin.

He adds that he’s relishing the opportunity to work with this Board.

“I’ve been involved with some other boards that aren’t as structured. Maybe some issues get lost in the matter. I just think that this Board is very straight-forward and professional and that intrigues me.”

He conludes by saying that he can see himself running again for the Board once the remainder of this term runs out, which will be in 2014.

To vote on December 15th, you must be at least 18 years of age, have been a resident of 100 Mile House for at least the last 30 days and have been a resident of BC for at least the last 6 months.

Polls will be open from 8am until 8pm on the 15th and there will be advance polling on December 5th.
