Johnston Bridge set to reopen to light weight vehicles

Courtesy of the City of Quesnel:

Effective at 7:00 pm, October 9, 2018, the Johnston Bridge will open to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 kilograms or lower but will remain closed to all industrial traffic and heavy commercial traffic.
McCall Engineering has assessed the structure of the bridge and determined vehicles under 10,000 kilograms are able to safely use the bridge. All personal vehicle’s (cars, pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans) GVWR will be under 10,000 kilograms. If in doubt, please refer to your vehicle’s insurance papers. The bridge will remain closed to all industrial traffic and most commercial traffic. The bridge will continue to be open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Industrial traffic and heavy commercial traffic must detour via Plywood Rd and Maple Dr. Industrial traffic will not be allowed to detour through Johnston Subdivision.
The engineering firm, hired by the City, is working to determine options that will return the bridge to full service.
From a recent bridge inspection, the City was made aware that areas of the bridge structure are compromised. As a safety precaution, the City made the decision to close the Johnston Bridge to all vehicle traffic on Wednesday, October 3.
The City would like to thank the public for their cooperation.
