Recently - I've received a questionnaire on the BC Hydro Smart Meter Debacle as follows:
1) Do you believe that the Wireless Smart Meter program should be stopped based on recent moratorium requests and an independent inquiry launched with full public hearings? If not, why not?
2) What is your position on exposing children and teachers in schools to Wi-Fi and other wireless microwave radiation communications technology now classified by the World Health Organization as a cancer risk and Health Canada has posted the need for reduced use for children?
On Point #1 - there is much information out there both for and against Smart Meters... sadly, Victoria has not learned the lessons over the handling over the HST... I think people should have a right to refuse Smart Meters if they chose... but I'm informed that homeowners are not been given much choice... accept the Smart Meter or have your power cut off... this is a tactic that even people like myself can not support
On Point #2 - With Wi-Fi providing easier access to the Internet than wired access... we need to have a fullsome debate and accomodation for those with Wi-Fi concerns but allow the best of technology to be available to our schools and society, in general..
Finally - on the point of meters... we know that heavy industry, business, institutions (like WL Seniors' Village) and new homes are either on water meters now or are mandated to be on them but not existing homes. Like Kamloops - I believe the time has come for this community to say, once and for all, that we are going forward on water meters or we are not, in a referendum, but let's not pick and choose who is and is not on water meters. If this community chooses not to proceed with water meters, after a extensive community debate and public education campaign and community vote (referendum), but let us make a decision, once and for all, then let's find other methods to reduce water consumption because it is known that the City's aquifer is reducing in size and we need to have methods/practices to ensure the long term sustainability of the aquifer...
