Candidate for [Williams Lake] Mayor Walt Cobb is asking for a meeting with Tolko owners' to discuss the future of the Creekside immediately following the election
As I go doorknocking, the concern by people in Williams Lake, not necessarily just Tolko employees, is - "What is happening to Creekside or the old Jacobsen Brothers mill?, says Cobb
People are asking what I can do as Mayor to find a solution, or in a worst case scenario, find closure for the employees and the general public?
"As stated at the recent Chamber of Commerce forum, my first step would be to meet with the (Tolko) owners to determine if there is anything the City could do to assist them, whether it be lobbying at the Provincial level for (wood) fibre, if that is the issue, expediting cutting permits, rail transportation issues or the bigger picture is the markets for the finished product. If we don't have customers, all else is fruitless. If there is anything else the City could do to find a solution, then let's look for it.
Cobb said "Further to that, I do not believe it is fair to any of the employees at any level to be left in limbo as to their future". We must all get on with our lives and if it does not include this particular mill then we must make the necessary adjustments, personally and municipally, but the uncertainty is not fair to anyone.
I ask if a solution cannot be found for re-opening, then do what is right for all the employees and let's move on...
