70 Days to General Voting Day!

70 days from today - local voters in Wells, Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and in rural areas of the Cariboo Regional District will be voting for locally elected positions (Rural Directors, Mayors, Councillors and School Trustees).  As well, those in Williams Lake and select portions of Areas D, E, F of the Cariboo RD will be asked, on Nov 15th, to authorize borrowing up to $10 million, as part of a $11.3 million project for a new Sam Ketchum Pool and other related renovations to the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex

So far - announcements on those who will be seeking either local election or re-election has been fairly light in the region but should begin to pick up steam as we get further along into September

As of this writing - my sources tell me that we could be seeing as many as six run for Mayor of Williams Lake (Surinderpal Rathor/Kerry Cook have already either announced or all but announced) while as many as 15 could be running for WL City Councillor (Sue Lachance announced earlier this week her bid to become a WL City Councillor).  Will it happen? We'll have to wait and see.  But we all should be paying attention to who is running, why and what they hope to accomplish as an elected official

Finally - I stumbled onto an article written by former Penhold, Alberta (located in south-central Alberta) Town Councillor Danielle Klooster where she talks about the top 6 awesome reasons to run for local office which are:

1) You care deeply about your community and want to make a positive impact.
2) You have proven leadership experience.
3) You’ve done your homework.
4) You are prepared to be part of a team.
5) You’re a long-term thinker, prepared to build for the future.
6) You can remain committed to serving the community and doing what you believe is best, no matter what.

Read that here.  Meanwhile, Ms. Klooster also writes about the five terrible reasons why you shouldn't  run for office which are:

1) “People are ready for change!”
2) “I’m going to clean house!”
3) “I’m going to fix the [insert pet peeve such as snow removal/pot holes/bike lanes] situation!”
4) “We have to get rid of the current corrupt/secretive/self-serving/incompetent bunch!”
5) “I’m going to make fiscal responsibility my number one priority!”
