The City of Williams Lake has begun the process of implementing both short-term and long-term sanitization systems for the Sam Ketcham Pool.
Equipment for the temporary system has already been ordered and installation work will immediately begin next week upon its arrival. The temporary system will be a liquid chlorine injection system, completely eliminating the use of chlorine gas in the facility. When that work is complete, the system must be tested and approved by the Interior Health Authority. Worksafe BC must also approve the system and the City’s procedures for using and maintaining it. In addition, staff must receive training on the new system. The pool will remain closed for at least another two weeks, depending on the technical and approval variables involved.
Work on a long- term solution has begun and will continue. A mechanical engineering firm is working on an analysis of systems and will provide a report outlining options, costs, and a recommendation on which option to use. This report is not expected before the end of the month.
“As we have said before, the pool will not be re-opened until we have completed the necessary work and regulatory approvals, and we are satisfied that the pool is safe for use,” says Mayor Kerry Cook. “We know the closure of the pool has caused inconvenience, and we are moving this process along as quickly as possible.”
