Smoke from pile burning may be visible from Nazko Highway

Courtesy of the BC Wildfire Service:

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development plans to burn up to 90 piles of woody debris at multiple sites within the perimeter of the 2017 Plateau wildfire, to help reduce wildfire risks in the area.

Smoke may be visible from the communities of Nazko and Baker Creek and from other points along Nazko Road (also known as the Nazko Highway) west of Quesnel.

Burning is expected to begin in late October 2020 and continue periodically until Feb. 28, 2021. It will occur only on days when site and weather conditions are favourable and will allow smoke to dissipate. These controlled burns will be conducted by ministry staff.

The piles of debris were created during the rehabilitation of fireguards that were constructed during the 2017 wildfire season. A fireguard is an area around the perimeter of a wildfire that is cleared of trees and other vegetation to help slow a fire’s spread.
