On Saturday, October 17 from 1-3pm -- the Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) is celebrating 35 years of service since its' creation in 1985. Wildwood VFD is 1 of the 14 VFD's that is provided by the Cariboo Regional District.
VFD's are generally established at the request of a community. In this case, it was the burning down of the local community store, at the time in the 1980's, that created the "community conversation" to ask their Regional District to establish a Fire Protection Service and after an affirmative vote of the residents of the Wildwood Fire Protection Service area, the bylaw to formally establish the Wildwood Fire Protection Service was adopted by the Cariboo Regional District Board in Fall 1985.
Like many other small VFD's across Regional Districts' -- it is a struggle to keep the service going but the local community always finds a way to keep it viable. It is a credit to great leadership at the Wildwood VFD, whether it was Randy Worsley who gave 30 years of his life to the Department (and still does in a lesser role) or now with Brad Elliot who is the current Wildwood VFD Fire Chief.
I am looking forward to this event on the 17th and hoping to see a big turnout by the community members'...
