Update to Cottonwood River Situation in CRD Area 'B'

The Cariboo Regional District's Emergency Operations Centre continues to monitor the Cottonwood River. Yesterday 14 properties in the Quesnel/Hixon Road and Landry Road area were put on evacuation alert while two properties were evacuated. No further alerts or orders have been issued for this area.

Extremely active erosion brought the shoreline within close proximity of the two evacuated homes overnight. It is hoped that ongoing efforts of contractors on site using heavy equipment and placing exceedingly large rocks will be successful in mitigating further damage and loss.

Traffic delays may be experienced in this area as work to protect the properties affected by this event is ongoing, with large equipment, trucks and machinery on the local roads. Current information for main roads throughout the area, and region is available online at www.drivebc.ca

Residents are reminded to use extreme caution at this time of year near on or around waterways as a result of elevated water levels and rapid currents. Rivers, streams and creeks throughout the Region are swollen and should be considered hazardous as high temperatures this weekend could see increased flows.

Further information will be available as the situation develops. For all inquiries, contact the Cariboo Regional District EOC at 250-398-5117 or, visit the CRD website at www.cariboord.bc.ca
