At this past Monday's Nelson City Council meeting - they deliberated the idea of calling for the legalization of marijuana, in accordance to a May 7th Notice of Motion from Nelson City Councillor Donna Macdonald
I should point out that Nelson Mayor John Dooley would have violated Section 116(2)(g) of the Community Charter had he refused to sign a letter, pursuant to a Council Resolution, calling for the legalization of marijuana. The section in question says:
(g) to reflect the will of council and to carry out other duties on behalf of the council;
Nelson Council decided to defer consideration of this matter until after the 2012 Union of BC Muncipalities AGM in Victoria, BC from Sept 24-28, 2012 by a vote of 4-2
You can read the (almost) verbatim discussion of this entire matter here
