Local receives award

Council presented Wes (Trevis) Sissons with a Certificate of Appreciation honouring him as the recipient of the 2012 BC Community Achievement Award for outstanding acts of dedication and commitment to Quesnel. His wife, Cheryl Sissons was also recognized for her support.

Farewell to Katimavik volunteers

Katimavik Project Leader Victoria Blais (far left) introduced what is hopefully not the last group of Katimavik volunteers. These 11 students have been working in our schools, hospitals, and local shops. They come from as far away as New Brunswick. In April, the Federal Government pulled their funding commitment to the program. In a letter to the Prime Minister in May, our Council lobbied the government to reinstate the program across Canada.

RCMP agreement renewed

The current occupancy agreement expires in July, 2012. The buildings debt has now been retired, so the capital portion of the occupancy agreement has been reduced. The agreement is a 5-year rollover and will expire July, 2017. Council accepted the recommendation to extend the agreement to 2017.

Northern Health’s campaign

Northern Health and community partners have launched a campaign that aims to educate northerners on the benefits of early HIV testing and treatment in efforts to prevent the spread of HIV throughout northern BC. Testing is now available in Prince George. The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS estimates that 25 per cent of people who are HIV-positive are unaware of their diagnosis. It is important to remember that HIV is a chronic, manageable disease - not a death sentence. Testing is available for anyone between the age of 13 to 65.

Auditor’s report received

City Auditor Mr. R.E. Rasmussen filed a Section 172 report to Council as requested by Ms. P. Morton. Section 172 of the Statutory Requirements addresses “Complaints to council or auditor about financial affairs”. These documents can be viewed on the City’s website at www.quesnel.ca/Council-Splash.html and by clicking on “Agendas and Minutes”. The cost to date of the report requested by Ms. Morton is $8,767.50 plus HST. Council received the report.

handyDART service on the move

City Council approved the recommendation by staff that free handyDART service will be provided for the Antique Machinery Park’s Family Fun Day on June 23. The cost to the City is approximately $250.
