Boil Water Notice update
Council received a briefing regarding the current Precautionary Boil Water Notice. Northern Health and the City of Quesnel advised the public on Friday June 3 of one isolated finding of Cryptosporidium in Well #9 in the Quesnel Water System and issued a precautionary Boil Water Notice (BWN) for the City of Quesnel's water distribution system. The risk of Cryptosporidium has been and remains low in Quesnel.
Follow-up testing is underway, and results could take up to six weeks. The boil water notice will remain in effect until the results are known.
The targeted, precautionary BWN is for people with weakened immune systems, young children and the elderly. Until further notice, these people are advised to consider boiling any water that will be used for human consumption (drinking, cooking, brushing teeth) for at least two minutes. Showering and bathing is fine as long as no water is swallowed. Water from the City's bulk water station, which provides water for many residents not on the City's water system, is included in the notice, as is any untreated water supply that draws from the City's system.
The positive sample was the result of extensive, proactive sampling the City was doing on its wells to further evaluate the water system. These tests were over and above the testing the City does on a regular basis to ensure water safety.
Chief Election Officer named
Lori Scott, the City's Deputy Corporate Administrator, was named the City's Chief Election Officer, with Sandy Brunt, Executive Assistant to the City Manager, named the Deputy Chief Election Officer. Council also approved having three polling stations open on voting day, Saturday Nov. 19. The stations will be at City Hall, Correlieu Secondary School and Dragon Lake Elementary. The City will work with School District 28 to partner on the election of school district trustees, in exchange for sharing election costs.

Other News:
Community groups will now have simpler, and likely less expensive, access to group liability insurance. Council agreed to invest in a policy that will provide coverage to groups booking a City facility or school through Quesnel and District Leisure Services. (Groups using the Arts and Recreation Centre or Twin Arenas already have the option of obtaining insurance through a Cariboo Regional District policy.) The cost of the insurance is expected to be recovered wholly through fees paid by the user groups buying the insurance. Should the total fees collected for a year be less than $2,000, the City will have to make up the difference.
The first draft of the City of Quesnel's 2010 Annual Report is available for public inspection and comment. The report may be viewed online at www.quesnel.ca It is also available in hard copy at Quesnel City Hall, 410 Kinchant St. It will be formally presented to Council for final approval on June 20 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.
Council recognized Bob Zimmerman for being named the BC Volunteer Search and Rescue Member of the Year. Zimmerman has been an active volunteer for more than 20 years. The award mentions that Zimmerman is "an extraordinary mentor, technical expert, innovator and leader . . . who effectively and calmly collaborates with all stakeholders under stressful situations." Zimmerman received the award from the Hon. Shirley Bond, Minister Responsible for Public Safety and Solicitor General. Zimmerman was named Quesnel's Citizen of the Year in 2003.
