WL Council signs Community Partnership Agreement with WL Cycling Club

At its meeting on May 24, Williams Lake City Council endorsed a Community Partnership Agreement with the Williams Lake Cycling Club, to work together to sustain vibrant, progressive and economic beneficial cycling initiatives in the city. The agreement was signed on June 7.

Initiatives that the City and Williams Lake Cycling Club will pursue include: Over the next two years, develop various forms of signage throughout the City that facilitate mountain bike tourism and promote Williams Lake as a mountain bike tourism destination. Seek collaborative ways in which to engage local businesses and tourism associations in activities that enhance local mountain bike infrastructure and the experiences of visiting mountain bikers. Seek collaborative funding opportunities that support the growth and development of mountain bike infrastructure that will enhance the economic impact of mountain biking in the City.

This will have a specific focus on establishing a business plan goal for mountain biking within the Central Cariboo Recreation budget in 2012. Continue to collaborate on creating off-road linkages between the three major trail systems in the City in a manner that complement the Parks Master Plan and other sustainability initiatives of mutual benefit.

Collaborate and share marketing and promotional material that enhances the collective effort to advance mountain biking as a economic driver in the City. The club has recently launched www.ridethecariboo.ca to provide mountain bikers with maps, local business information, and travel planning tools, as well as photos and videos to promote the city and region.

“The City is excited about this new partnership, and I look forward to working together with the Williams Lake Cycling Club and working together to realize the potential infrastructure and economic benefits,” says Mayor Kerry Cook. “This agreement means the City and the Cycling Club can work together to benefit the community.”

“The Williams Lake Cycling Club and the Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium applaud Mayor Kerry Cook and her council for their ongoing leadership in the mountain biking sector throughout the Cariboo region,” says Justin Calof , Vice President of the Williams Lake Cycling Club and Chairperson of the Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium. “This Partnership Agreement is another progressive step towards our collective goal of diversifying the City’s economy into this growing sector.”
