July 21st, 2023 Daily Update from the Cariboo Fire Centre

1) Weather Update

Cooler and slightly more humid conditions are expected today with west-northwest winds throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre. Scattered thundershower activity will develop during the afternoon/evening.

On Saturday a developing cold front will approach the coast from the southwest, increasing the pressure gradient over the Fire Centre and generating gusty south-southwest winds.

The risk of thundershowers will remain over the Quesnel Zone and east of the Fraser River while more stable conditions are seen in the Chilcotin Zone

2) Wildfire Updates, by Zone

a) Central Cariboo Zone (Williams Lake/Cariboo RD Areas D,E,F)

There are 14 active fires in the Central Cariboo Zone. Of these fires, 8 are Out of Control, 5 are Being Held and 1 is Under Control.

Lots of smoke and increased fire activity on the modified response/monitor-only fires within the wetbelt. Cariboo Fire Centre is aware of the smoke, and we will continue to monitor the fires as needed.

Rappel crews are actioning this fire with support from skimmers.

Ground crews are prioritizing securing decked timber in the area and are working to gain access into the fire with air support.

b) Quesnel Zone (Quesnel/Wells; Cariboo RD Areas A,B,C,I)

There are 16 active fires in the Quesnel Zone.

As of July 14, 2023 the four fires that now comprise the Gillies Complex (including the Wildfires of Note) are being managed by a dedicated Incident Management Team (IMT).

This wildfire is displaying aggressive fire behaviour and is being pushed east by gusty wind conditions.

Helicopters bucketed most of the fire yesterday and ground crews have hose laid around the perimeter.

c) Chilcotin Zone (Cariboo RD Areas J/K)

 There are currently 11 active fires within the Chilcotin Zone.

As of July 14, 2023 the 10 fires that now comprise the Kappan Complex (including the Wildfires of Note) are being managed by a dedicated Incident Management Team (IMT).

 Itcha Range (C11407 & C11405)

 Operational Objectives

These fires are located within the Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park and are being monitored in accordance with BC Provincial Parks

 Operational Objectives

A lightening storm started 6 new fires. BCWS crews are being coordinated to assess and action these wildfires

Location: West of Alexis Creek

Ground crews were onsite throughout the night to achieve objective and the fire is now Being Held.

Location: 2.3km West of Two Lake


d) 100 Mile Zone (100 Mile House; Cariboo RD Areas G,H,L)

 There is currently 1 active fire in the 100 Mile House Zone. This fire is Under Control
