July 22nd, 2023 Daily Update from the Cariboo Fire Centre
1) Weather Update
Gusty south/southwest winds are forecast for most of the afternoon as a cold front pushes through the Fire Centre. The winds will shift west/northwest by late afternoon/early evening and diminish after sunset.
There is a slight risk of a late afternoon/evening thundershower in the Quesnel zone.
A deep low pressure system off the coast will continue to affect the Fire Centre Sunday pushing more cloud into the area particularly in zones west of the Fraser.
Lower wind speeds are expected with a chance for precipitation during the evening/overnight in the Chilcotin.
2) Wildfire Updates, by Zone
a) Central Cariboo Zone (Williams Lake/Cariboo RD Areas D,E,F)
There are 15 active fires in the Central Cariboo Zone.
Of these fires, seven are Out of Control, five are Being Held and three are Under Control.

Operational Objectives
Ground crews have fully protected decked timber in the area and it is not threatened by the wildfire. Ground crews will continue to create hose trail and mop us as this fire displays low fire activity.

Skimmers cooled the fire with water early Friday morning and ground crews were able to achieve 50% containment Friday evening. Saturday objectives are to lay hose around the perimeter of the fire and mop up the interior.

There are 16 active fires in the Quesnel Zone.
Of these fires, 10 are Out of Control, one is Being Held, and five are Under Control.
As of July 14, 2023 the four fires that now comprise the Gillies Complex are being managed by a dedicated Incident Management Team (IMT).

Operational Objectives
These three wildfires are remote mostly only accessible by helicopter. Crews will be working to suppress all three wildfires today.

Air tankers blanketed the fire with retardant on Friday. Objectives are to utilize heavy equipment to improve the retardant line. Ground crews will utilize heavy equipment with planned ignitions to bring the fire to existing roads and natural guards.

Air tankers blanketed the fire with retardant on Friday. Strong winds created some spotting along the north east flank of the fire. Ground crews worked into the night on Friday to secure the machine guard around the perimeter and Saturday's objectives are to complete the guard around 100% of the wildfire and eliminate any spotting caused by winds.
