WL Council Mtg Review - Feb 19th

For those in Williams Lake - your City Council meets Tuesday and here are some of the interesting items:

1) Valerie Thiessen from the Williams Lake Dog Park Committee will appear before Council to discuss the naming of the Boitanio Park Dog Park

2) At their Nov 6th, 2012 WL Council meeting - Council set a budget for the CAO Recruitment at approximately $17,000.  Now, WL City Staff will table the recent Cheque Runs of the City and in those cheque runs, it reports that a payout to Waterhouse Executive Search Ltd (CAO Recruitment Firm used by City of WL) totaled $21,354.14.  A increase of $4,354.14.  I could understand an extra $1,000 but I'd like to know why the final figure ended up $4,354 higher than the set budget in November.  Also of note - the City to date (Jan 1 - Feb 14th) has spent $24,751.66 for legal fees.  Some of this would be for Staff to consult with City lawyers on planning matters that may have legal implications for the City but I wonder how much of this relates to the public battle with the Cariboo RD over Rural Fringe Fire Protection and the City's labour dispute...

3) 2 DVP's (Development Variance Permits) and 1 DP (Development Permit) are set to receive Council approval, subject to public input.

4) Two Heritage Matters - place 'Potato House' on City's Heritage Register (view here) and amend the Heritage Committee's Terms of Reference re: Heritage Values Establishment - view here

5) Lance Marshall asks for permission to discuss with Council the possibility to subdivide his lot at 44 Woodland Dr - view here.  As she has previously done - Mayor Cook will declare a conflict of interest as she is a resident of Woodland Dr which will leave either Councillor Geoff Bourdon, or should he be absent, Councillor Danica Hughes (as Acting Mayor) to Chair this portion of the meeting.  City Staff ask Council to reject this item -- and for good reason, if Council allows this (subdivide lot at 44 Woodland Dr), it makes the whole conversation around water/sewer services for Woodland Drive essentially moot and Council may as well allow everyone to subdivide on Woodland Drive and could open a "Pandora's Box" in regards to water/sewer services on Woodland Dr and the subdivision of lots in this neighbourhood

In a month and a half the City spent $24,751.66 on legal fees. WOW!!! That is unbelievable. If they keep this up it will be $198,013.28 at the end of the year!!! The Mayor, Council and City Management have serious issues they need to work through
