Mayor Cook responds to Scott Nelson re: South Lakeside Drive

From the Rush:

Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook has weighed in on Scott Nelson’s call to re-pave South Lakeside Drive past the Walmart to a nearby school. First of all Cook says it’s just a half a kilometre away, not the 1.5 kms to 2 kms Nelson was claiming.

Cook also said it’s really important for people to realize South Lakeside Drive is a priority for her council. She says that’s why the city has budgeted $20,000 for design work in 2011 and why they’ve budgeted $1 million dollars to widen the road in 2012. Cook also says extending the paving would be tough under the city’s current economic situation pointing out that previous mayor Nelson’s council left the city over $12 million dollars in debt.

She says all that red ink has made balancing fiscal responsibility and spending money on projects, challenging. Construction on widening South Lakeside from Hodgson road to Pioneer Drive is expected to begin next spring.
