With just under 30 days remaining before individuals can legally file their nomination papers for Mayor, Councillor, Electoral Area Director (Regional Districts) and School Trustee (School Districts), I thought I would take a moment to update a look at the upcoming races for Williams Lake Mayor/Councillors:
To date - I have a list of, as many as, 11 individuals - either looking at or outright running, for the Office of Councillor - City of Williams Lake. We'll all know the official list on October 21st. Note - if the list doesn't grow beyond 11 (and is confirmed on October 21st), then it would be equal to the 11 that ran in the 2008 election but less than the 14 that run in the 2005 Election
As for the Mayors' Race - unless someone in Williams Lake is planning to wait until 3:59pm on October 14th - it really looks like that the City will have a tri-horse race for the Williams Lake Mayor's Chair. At this point - we can confirm that incumbent Mayor Kerry Cook along with former Williams Lake Mayors Scott Nelson and Walt Cobb are all in the race and it doesn't appear, and I don't have any information to believe otherwise that this list will grow any bigger. Note - in 2008, it was Cook vs former WL City Councillor Paul French for the WL Mayor's seat. In 2005 - it was Scott Nelson, Kerry Cook, Dr Elmer Thiessen and former WL City Councillor Deb DeMare all seeking the Mayors' seat here and in 2002 - it was former Mayor and rumoured WL City Councillor candidate Ivan Bonnell vs former Mayor Rick Gibson, Kerry Cook and Jean Grieve who all sought the WL Mayor's seat
I encourage everyone to stay informed (either on my blog or through the various local media sites) and involved in some way in this upcoming municipal race - whether you are planning to help a candidate/candidates, simply attend your local all-candidates forum, or write to your local media (newspapers (Tribune/Advisor) and at Welcome to Williams Lake) - either in support of or against a candidate(s) for Willliams Lake Mayor or Councillor
Note - if you do want to write to the local media in support of /against a candidate(s), you can do so in the following ways:

The "All Candidates Forum" for City Councillors is usually sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce and held in late October. For the Mayors Race - there is one (all candidates forum) usually held by WL District Chamber of Commerce, for its' members' only, in addition - the local Construction Association usually holds a forum for Mayoralty candidates.
In 2008 -we saw Brian Garland offer up use of his building on North Broadway to hold a "Town Hall" style meeting for the then Mayor's race, consisting of Kerry Cook and Paul French

Update - Councillor Walters announced this past Tuesday, according to today's Williams Lake Tribune that she will indeed seek a 2nd term, citing need to follow up on the newly adopted OCP/ICSP
Councillor Rathor meanwhile, yesterday (Wednesday), announced that he wants a 7th term as a Williams Lake City Councillor. Rathor's desire to serve includes general Council-community accountability, infrastructure, economic development, job creation, financial accountability, and housing for seniors'
The Tribune also reports WL City Councillors Zacharias and Barr have not yet decided to seek an additional term, and Councillor Geoff Bourdon has made a decision, but is unwilling to say, at this point.
Editor's Note - I'm surprised that Councillor Walters didn't mention anything about the arts in her re-election bid as she has been WL Council's "point-person" on the Arts/Culture file in Williams Lake
Also - notwithstanding the statement of Councillor Bourdon - I believe he is running again, because I would be very surprised if he called it quits after just one term. He seems to be enjoying his role as a City Councillor
As for Barr/Zacharias - it is fair to suggest that both have not made a decision (and this is confirmed with others that I've talked to) but keeping in mind that neither of them have to say anything until October 14th (last date to file nomination papers)
Finally - Mayoralty Candidate Scott Nelson, in today's Tribune, says (through a campaign ad), if elected, the scheduled South Lakeside Drive paving project will be budget prioritized and completed in 2012.

Way to go Scott....promote something that is ALREADY in the 2012 Capital Plan as your own idea. Most people are smarter than that...especially since this has been prominently talked about in a couple different places in the last few weeks.
Actually most people AREN'T smarter than that, most people are sheep that take things at face value because it is easier to spit rhetoric than pay attention, get involved, and understand the full scope of any argument.
Apehanger.
